Steven Gooden

Experience and expertise

Steven Gooden is the President of the Jamaica Securities Dealers Association (JSDA), the lobby group representing securities dealers throughout Jamaica; a position he holds since 2017. He has led the charge to promote the interest of the securities industry in Jamaica, to develop and improve its standards while ensuring an active role is played in advancing Jamaica’s economic agenda, market expansion and development. Gooden has a great passion for the deepening and integration of regional capital markets, an agenda he has been championing throughout his career.  Through this, he believes the Caribbean can become a substantial niche player in the global capital markets.

Gooden is also the Chief Executive Officer of NCB Capital Markets Limited (NCBCM); the wealth, asset management and investment banking arm of the NCB Financial Group, a post he has held since 2013. Under his leadership, NCBCM has become the leading capital markets outfit in Jamaica, while expanding its reach throughout the Caribbean through the establishment of hubs in the Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and soon-to-be Guyana. His ascension to executive management began at the age of 26 when he was appointed General Manager for one of Jamaica’s leading fund management companies.

Rooted in his deep affinity for market digitisation, Gooden pioneered the launch of the region’s first digital public equities application platform, GoIPO in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. GoIPO is part of NCBCM’s digital suite of investment solutions that allow investors to make trades from anywhere in the world, using any digital device.

Gooden currently sits on the board of directors of the Jamaica Stock Exchange and several companies within the NCB Financial Group. Additionally, he is the Chairman of two publicly listed junior market companies and sits on the board of directors of TransJamaican Highway Ltd.

He is a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, has a Master’s Degree in Finance and Economics, a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Accounting, and has received many accolades in the areas of research and portfolio management. Originally called Colonial Bank, we were born in 1837 as the first commercial bank in Trinidad and Tobago. Our 185-year history is testimony to a successful growth strategy fuelled by expansion through acquisition, prudent risk management principles, comprehensive and innovative corporate social investment programmes and initiatives, and visionary leadership paired with multitalented and loyal employees.

Through the years, we continuously evolved to match the demands of growing economies and the rapid social changes in the markets where we currently operate. Significant expansion during this period, through the acquisition of several subsidiaries, resulted in Republic Bank performing the dual roles of a licensed commercial bank and a holding company for its subsidiaries. While the roles were well managed, the Group needed a more sustainable structure to facilitate even more effective management and good governance, given our current and future strategies.
